Before I knew what horse racing handicapping meant, I too found it difficult to picture a bunch of wheelchair-bound horses rolling down the track. I thought, what a cruel and perverse sport that is. Horse racing handicapping actually refers to the method someone uses when placing a wager on a particular horse. What did you think; it was merely a guessing game? When there's money on the line, people will do as much as they can to ensure that money is not only coming back, but with some additional interest.

Ask any avid horse racing fan, and they'll tell you it's not easy to determine what horse will win a race. There are numerous factors to take into consideration when looking at a particular horse to win. For example, you have to ask yourself, is the horse doing bettor or worse? What other horses is it in competition with? What are the other horses current racing records? The process of horse racing handicapping takes into account a particular horse's abilities (from past races and published racing records) and placed within the current conditions under which it will be racing. What are the track conditions? Is it dirt or grass? Did it rain the night before? What's the distance the horse will be racing, and how well does the particular horse typically fair in that event? All these questions and more are taken into consideration when handicapping.

Handicapping may also be referring to additional weight added to some horses depending on their ability or age, in order to equalize the field as best as possible. Again, there's a lot to take into account when attempting to determine the winner of a race. But that's also what makes horse racing these animals so much fun.
