The last time I saw horse racing was when I caught a matinee screening of "Seabiscuit" at the local AMC movie theater. Though horse racing existed long before recorded history, it more or less became a professional sport in the early 1700s in England, during the reign of Queen Anne. It was this type of match racing that eventually led to the spectator sport in which people wagered on the outcome. It wasn't long before specially designed courses for horse racing where all over the country. The winnings grew in order to attract the fastest horses in the land. Even at that time, there was a lot of money to be made.

The forming of the Jockey Club marked the initial efforts to govern the sport of horse racing. The organization still exists today, and is the main authority figure over British and American horse racing.
